“only a few thousand blogs were receiving replies a month” i can’t even fathom this. are there. are there only a few thousand of us chatty fandom-y personable blogs?? how do we not literally all know each other if this is the case. like everyone i follow who’s a person has replies on and everyone i know follows people who reply to each other and before i follow people on here i check the tumblr.com/tagged/[theirurl] tag to see how they talk to their friends because im a fucking creep like how is it only a few thousand people i don’t understand
Lets break this down, currently Tumblr hosts 262 Million Blogs (according to Tumblr’s about page). We know that the fandom blogs use replies extensively. But that is pretty much it. Artist blogs prefer the majority of their posts to be reblogged (if vaguely threatening comics are to be believed), same with aesthetic blogs. People would probably reply to porn blogs so their engagement doesn’t show on their own blog, but since few porn bloggers turn on replies to their posts, that’s right out. Given the options most will reblog a political post with their input than reply.
Reply is very useful, but it is only turned on by a limited amount of creators for a limited subset of posts. And you can (for the most part) only reply from the dashboard. It sucks it’s gone (or at least limited), a better solution would be nice, but it is understandable why so few blogs use it.
